The Day Of The Lord Is Coming!

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:1 – 11

Introduction: Today we want to look at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. I know it has been over 2000 years since the Lord was here but as Christians, as believers in God, Jesus, and the scriptures, we must always remember that Jesus (who cannot lie) promised to return one day. John 14:3 “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” This is an absolute truth Jesus will come again or the entire population of heaven are liars because Angels also promised. Acts 1:11 “Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” It is safe to believe that Jesus is coming again. We do not know when but the prophecies have been fulfilled, the signs seem to be filled, and the world seems to be right for the Tribulation Period, and so many seem to have forgotten or doubt His coming, so I say the season seems to be right for the Lords return. Another sign is there has been a great falling away from the truth and the churches and people have left sound preaching for entertainment and fleshy satisfaction by the imitators of the Lords churches. They have sought to satisfy their “itchy ears” with the teachings of the flesh. I do not believe the world will recover from its downfall. I see the world falling deeper and deeper into trouble until the one with a solution comes to save the world, which will be the anti-christ or the imitator of Christ Jesus our Saviour.

Today we want to look at eleven points that Christians need to look at during this time. Eleven points that should help us through these evil time until death takes us or “The Day of the Lord comes.

                               I.      The Day of the Lord will be a surprise, it will be unexpected by them. “the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.” Verse 2

A.    Will the coming of the Lord be unseen by the lost?

B.     We do know that it will be a surprise to a lot of Christians.

C.     I think the thief reference could very well be the surprise that Jesus really did return. Lets notice in Matthew 24:42 - 43 "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. (43.) But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up."

D.    The word thief means – one who is a stealer – the Lord will rapture them out before they know what has happened. I believe the world will know what happened, and it would not surprise me if they do not see Him in the clouds.

E.      Mark 13:32 - 35 "But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. (33.) Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. (34.) For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. (35.) Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:"

II.      When people think all is safe, all is well, all is satisfactory, LOOK because He comes. “when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them” Verse 3

A.    This destruction comes on them that are left behind.

B.     They will be happy; they will celebrate killing the unborn, homosexuality, stealing, hurting Christians and churches, and etc, etc, etc. All will be well for the lost in thinking God and Christ, and Churches have been defeated and it is smooth cruising the rest of the way. Matthew 24:36 - 42 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (37.) But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (38.) For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, (39.) And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (40.) Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. (41.) Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. (42.) Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come."

C.     Just when the world is right for them comes The Day Of The Lord then the tribulation period. Or the wrath of God on this evil world. It is called destruction.

D.    Just when their world was just like they wanted it, sudden destruction will fall on them.

III.      Christians ought not to get caught in a surprise. “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness” Verse 4

A.    In other words “you are not untaught” ignorant.

B.     Any surprise to believers is an un-education or an un-watching because they lack church in their life, they lack studding and remembering in their life.

C.     Paul warned the church at Rome, Romans 13:11 - 14 "And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. (12.) The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. (13.) Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. (14.) But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."

D.    Paul also reminds us in Ephesians 4:17 - 24 "This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, (18.) Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (19.) Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. (20.) But ye have not so learned Christ; (21.) If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: (22.) That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (23.) And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; (24.) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."

IV.      We are not in darkness but in light, we are able to understand “Ye are all the children of light” Verse 5

A.    This means as believers in Christ we are enlightened persons, whose understandings were enlightened by the Spirit of God.

B.     There is no reason for any believer to be ignorant of the Lords return or unprepared.

C.      John 12:35 - 36 "Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. (36.) While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them."

D.    Ephesians 5:8 - 9 "For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (9.) (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)"

                            V.      Let us not sleep “Therefore let us not sleep” Verse 6

A.    The last thing Christians and churches need to do is to sleep or rest, understanding Jesus could return at anytime.

B.     The old saying is “while the cat is away the mice will play” but this cat is never away and the mice should never play.

C.     If one is a sleep many bad things can happen. Isaiah 56:10 “His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.”

VI.      let us watch and be sober “but let us watch and be sober.” Verse 6

A.    Sober means to be of a sound mind in thinking.

B.     Titus 2:12 - 13 "Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; (13.) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;"

VII.       Putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. Verse 8

A.    This is the gear we need to protect ourselves and to battle evil.

B.     Ephesians 6:11 “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

C.     Faith, Love, and Hope is all we as Christians have in this world.

VIII.      God hath not appointed us to wrath

A.    This is our greatest blessing on this earth, that we are not appointed to Gods wrath.

B.     Romans 9:21 “Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?”

IX.      to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

A.    God hath appointed us to obtain salvation only through Christ.

B.     2 Timothy 2:10 “Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”

                            X.      we should live together with him.

                         XI.      Wherefore comfort yourselves together,
